The Chicago Boys Are Back

After having such a fun and successful night on the bay the day before, Eric and Tim decided to return with Eric's brother Matt. Kinda. Actually, the plan was to see if we could muster up some early season shark.

We headed off shore right at sunset (moonrise), and although the seas were not too rough, it was a bit much for these three, and quite frankly not the best conditions for shark anyway. We headed out to a little reef that I like down south, but the Coast Guard was doing drills there, and deterred us away. After trying a little shipwreck closer to home, barely getting the chum broken loose, all three agreed that bay bass fishing would be a better way to enjoy themselves.

Coming back to the bay bass scene seemed like a good idea. And although the bite was not nearly as good as the night before, there were still several bites, and best of all, Matt got into the action. In fact, I think he scored best of all three. There Tim, I said it. ;-)

It was so funny hearing Matt and Tim give Eric a hook-set lesson. It seemed Eric, who was so on his game the night before, was having trouble reeling down on his hook-sets. This is something that everybody fishing San Diego Bay needs to have down. Matt was very good at feeling the bite, letting the fish load the rod, and winding down before arching the rod tip on the hook-set.

The bass were very receptive on the green side this fine evening, and they really saved what could have been a sloppy, and non productive shark hunting venture.

Eric did redeem himself by catching a really fat Spotted Bay Bass. I guess those hook-set lessons paid off quick for him. Of course, Matt being the competitive brother that he is, was not to be out done, and immediately caught a nice one of his own.

Having these three along was great. What a thrill it was.
