Pineapple on the Bay

San Diego Bay Calico The unfortunate mystery of fishing tidal waters in a busy, expensive to live in city, is how do we schedule our fishing time around the best bite? I have been fishing San Diego Bay for thirty years, been showing the big bay to others for more than five of those years, and I have still not figured that out. Sometimes you just have to fish during the wrong time. A good fisherman will make the best of it, however, and not let that stop him from catching fish. That's the kind of fisherman I was honored to have aboard on this fine Friday.

David and I met late in the morning, and although the tide was dropping, it was not a large exchange of water, and the weather was quite windless and warm - almost hot at times. David being a San Diego Bay veteran was able to roll with the punches, though. Having not been on the water in almost five months, he was ready to get out, and have some fun. After playing some Rock-n-Roll on deaf bass ears, I brought up a lark that David was more than happy to roll with. It had been almost two weeks since our last storm system knocked the Calicos off the traps. I figured they might just be willing to bite now. Although it took me Drop-shotting Berkley Gulp! on 8# to get bit, David did just fine with a Western Plastics Swim Tail on 20#. A few fish were missed, I think due to the sluggish bite, but the ones we caught were quite entertaining. Being a modest fisherman, I only captured a few shots of the Bass variety that Dave caught. San Diego Bay Sand Bass

A few moves here and there, and we were able to muscle up some Sand Bass, and chunky Spotted Bay Bass. It was a short trip, but none-the-less a productive one. I am positive that it was the great fisherman, excellent baits, and the gobs of Uni Butter that helped us catch the fish we did.

Total: 6 Kelp Bass (Calico Bass), 4 Barred Sand Bass, 6 Spotted Sand Bass (Bay Bass) - All Released
